The problem is those companies generally either sell directly to manufacturers (not Russian at this point), or sell to middlemen, who then either sell to other middlemen, or move them around to different markets for a better price.

Yes, that is a problem, but I think not enough due diligence is being done.They can't prevent every scenario, but I worry they're barely doing anything at all.Like,if it's not directly russia,it's all good,nothing to see here. From their POV: Why spend money to have fewer sales and make less money‽

Because the Treasury can really hurt them, so the manufacturers are doing it. But the middlemen aren't necessarily, because they are working with much smaller potential profits and it's not worth the compliance costs. There is where the crackdown should be.

Manufacturers are not vetting middlemen enough though. A while ago, an NGO discovered that a Dutch company owned by a russian bought chips from a Dutch manufacturer (and then sold those on to russia via another middleman). The russian-owned Dutch company should have been flagged, but wasn't.

Yes, it's something at least, but if it's anything like illegal drug trade, it's only a tiny percentage that gets caught. Here's a few links:

Components in pictures are common as dust or sand. We are talking about sub 10 usd parts. You personally can buy thousands on mouser, digikey or anywhere else.
There is no way how to block north koeans from getting voltage converter or arm cpu for several cents.
