there was an annular eclipse in welly in 91 that I remember as a kid but i don't think there've been any total or annular ones since then that were visible here.

Worry: cloud cover in July? I was thinking the path that takes it over Northern Australia would be more likely to result in good viewing.
Downside, of course, is that it is very hard to get to and not a good place for a conference :)

The Central Otago rain shadow region is on the totality path.
But yes, parts of Australia have less cloud cover in July.
