i’m bias tho. i’m from post industrial middle america, a place that feels distant in the american imagination. but decline didn’t just take jobs, it took with it black folks dignity and rendered our culture invisible.

Americans of all stripes talk about the loss of manufacturing jobs when the real issue is the loss of *union* jobs. The factories closed, the workers got nonunion jobs that have been taking advantage of them ever since.
