Ummm Punk Rock preceded The Damned. He was great at what he did but Patti Smith came before and Iggy Pop came even earlier. So did the Ramones and New York Dolls. I was there. I remember.

Patti Smith was good but sounded like tail end of the sixties. If we are going to have Iggy then we have to have the Stones and the Kinks and keep going back. New Rose sounded like the beginning of something very different shame it had to be called punk rock.

You obviously never saw The Stooges if you compare them to the Kinks. The Stones were more blues before they turned pop. Had Brian Jones survived his addiction he might have come back punk post Stones but we will never know. He had the mentality.

I'm not old enough but I know Iggy wanted to be Jim Morrison and the Doors and the Stooges were Kinks fans. Everything is a continuum. The Stooges didn't come out of a vacuum but had their own thing - the same with the Damned and the Pistols - they were different again from the Stooges.

I think the differences I am reading is between British Punk and New York/Detroit/ West Coat Punk. It was a zeitgeist where the same musical rebellion arose parallel on the nearly the same time line but with different influences.

Man, that’s sad. The Damned were the first band I ever saw live early 80s, after he left, but I also saw them later when he’d rejoined.
“New Rose” was also one of the first songs I learned on guitar in my first band.

Agree with you. It’s probably more accurate to say that the punk explosion happened with the Sex Pistols with the Damned releasing the first single of this particular explosion. All standing on the shoulders of giants though (the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Ramones, etc.).

Absolutely. In terms of a punk sound, the Kinks with that reverb on ‘You Really Got Me’. Dr Feelgood and British pub rock peers of the New York scene. The Monks and Sonics contemporaries of the Brit invasion. All the way back to Johnny Kid and the Pirates, Link Wray, Chuck Berry…
