All of the above is great, and you can absolutely make the tool you first described, using the same process as you would a dapping punch. I have one cut from an old file, with a sharpened parameter so you can drive it slightly below the surface of the primary material:

I use this. It’s called a nail set (I think) and it came as a pack of 3 sizes, from Home Depot, for countersinking drywall nails. Cheap and works great, supports the round shape while you form the other side.

This. I make rivets with a dome by drawing a bead on one side of the rivet before inserting it into the hole, and refine the shape in a piece of steel with graduated holes in it (a riveting anvil) to form a mushroom shape and use a cup bur even before I rivet…cont.

The opposite end of the rivet gets left a little long if I want it to be domed both sides, and if I want an invisible rivet, I make it shorter and hammer it flat then file and sand and polish until it is invisible.

These rivets were exaggerated on top of the cuff by leaving the “bead” on the rivet largely untouched (not mushroomed) and inside I wanted them rounded but I didn’t use a cup bur because I didn’t want them to be uncomfortable so they’re kind of flat-domes.

When fixing the rivet in place use a dapping block (convex holes) and you can make a convex punch too so both sides retain a dome.

I have a rivet gizmo I use sometimes. I forget what it’s called. You can buy pre made rivets in different sizes for it. I like the look sometimes. Other times hand look is better.

I think Robert Lopez used to make a riveting gizmo?!? Not sure if he still does. I believe that the Deb Karash made something called a little black block that has a riveting cone? I don’t rivet much so I am probably no help😂😂
