I've read a lot of the history. It took years before most Germans accepted the truth. The winter of 1945 was extremely harsh in a ruined Germany, and their thoughts were, "Why did they do this to us?"

A friend recommended The End by Ian Kershaw. The end of WWII is beyond description. Horrifying what Hitler put his people through. Great description of the mind set of the German population in the dwindling months. Good informative read.
I just finished a book called. Promise me you’ll shoot yourself. It’s amazing the perspectives many of them had. They truly did not see themselves as the bad guys.
Most people in Russia think that their country is fighting the war in Ukraine to rescue the Ukranian people from neo-Nazis. The steady drumbeat of misinformation in the U.S. for the past 30 years has convinced half of the U.S. population to believe in the MAGA religion. Not surprising.
Read “A Woman in Berlin”. It is not an easy read and I would recommend doing a bit of background checking before starting it, but it is a good accounting of what the civilian population experienced in the aftermath of the war
