For one thing (and this is probably the dominant motivation) it's much much easier than any of the alternatives. You basically don't have to do anything: no sticking your neck out, no working weekends and recesses. Just sit back and act the savvy operator, letting them walk right into your trap.

But another valid concern IMO: it's not hard to imagine all-out obstruction working well enough to prevent the worst consequences, and Rs successfully blaming much milder economic impacts on Ds. "We're only in a recession because Ds & courts kept us from cutting out all the waste and fraud"

That said, there are some big problems with this strategy. From a very cynical standpoint, there's just no world in which you let Trump/Musk/Rs run riot and 2026 is a normal democratic election. Plausible direct fed interference, but certainly zero fed enforcement of local interference.

Also, the unpopularity of dismantling/weaponizing the federal government won't just be ideological, it will be be a direct result of impoverish/deport/evict/unemploy/killing millions. Allowing that collateral damage just so you can blame it on Rs is both dispicable and hard to defend to voters.

And then, even in a best-case scenario where they manage to piss everyone off without killing too many people and leave elections untouched, finger-pointing and blame-gaming without a track record of material opposition or an affirmative alternative vision just doesn't seem like a winning strategy.
