He stopped mimicking him explicitly at least 10 days ago. His most recent forays were to criticise Rudd/Albo/Wong re their past comments about Trump, and to say we should "cut Trump some slack"

So, not "distancing" yet but I suspect he is now aware of the significant potential downside.

It's a classic piece of political market differentiation. John Howard pioneered it with the creation of One Nation. It allowed him to harvest the votes or racists while keeping his and his party's brand untarnished.
