Wikipedia doesn't help to understand this as much as her video helped: the key concept was:

restate the “bodies at rest stay at rest unless acted upon” law as a function of acceleration over time

i think reading the paper and rewatching her video will be more helpful than Wikipedia, sadly

I think the key part is that last line of the wiki article:

“This moves the paradox to the question of whether a surface with no second derivative is unphysical”

That dome can’t exist in the real world, so this is all a thought experiment

oh, the way i was understanding it was that the unphysicality was not important, or that this was an argument like the incompleteness one: that the model of that particular Newton law has a hole of sorts, a corner case it doesn't handle [kinda]

anyway what i need is further re-watching; being lazy

What “the incompleteness one” refer to? I’m not aware of any paradoxes in physics described as incompleteness, and I don’t see any analogy to Godel’s theorems edge being unphysical or not is not applicable

ah yeah, that's not the comparison i intended: more like how math has that “hole” at the bottom -- and how i was understanding this thought experiment to also be demonstrating a hole [in that tiny niche corner of physics]

in other words, it's fine this is all hypothetical: they're discussing models

This is a fascinating example. I wonder if cases like these could have hinted to the scientists in the past that beneath Newtonian mechanics there is a fundamentally stochastic theory that only appears deterministic at most large scale observations.

Also, since Newtonian mechanics is the limiting case of Quantum mechanics, I wonder what happens as you take this limit for a quantum particle moving on this slope.

Does a limit exist? Or do you obtain the two different solutions as different limiting values? Or a secret third thing?
