My journey with TrueNAS took a very odd turn. Linux is my jam, yet I can't get anything to work as I would like, so I'm back to the drawing board and likely reinstalling QNAP software.

I bought a new NAS computer (with space for 4 disks) and installed Ubuntu Server, so I can manage everything the way I want. In may case with RAID1 via mdadm.
I sold my old QNAP so at the end it wasn't the expensive.
SMB shares were read-only no matter what ACL I applied. No straight forward way to import data from backups. No system level file manager. Many user niceties are missing and I don't have a day or two to figure it all out.
Open source is good. I looked at Unraid, I watched some videos. And ultimately the idea of my family's data being locked because I forgot to extend a subscription, card expiration, etc. was a huge turn off. I thought it'd be a great solution, then saw the pricing page and moved on.
