Garland was at first refused when he tried to enlist in the U.S. army, then accepted as an MP, but despite his considerable experience (he invented a sight for machine guns on scout cars) he was not deployed despite his repeated requests.

After the war he worked as a body guard for Paul Robeson for a while. And left the communist party. As always @lincolnbrigade.bsky.social has more good info
