Absolutely. But it reminds me a lot when Mastodon and the Fediverse appeared. Cycles are faster now. If it gets decent traction, it will evolve faster. But who knows... all good things tend to get coopted.

Actually, maybe the micro-brewery industry is a good model for political organizing right now. Work to build a local excellent group. Grow it locally, with maybe some very carefully expansions into regional areas. If lots of us are doing it, it aggregates towards a big political movement

To me it's not just about decentralized, it's about the business model and the ownership structure. If the business model is advertising, and the ownership structure has a mandate to increase quarterly earnings, then it's going to end up with extreme content and brainrot.

That’s a technical solution that makes everything harder and doesn’t address the issue of ownership (e.g.: bitcoin being decentralised AND oligarchical)

it may seem that way, but I fail to see a situation where a for centralized mass adopted social media app isn't owned by a tech oligarch. I suppose it could be government owned, but looking at the government we have now that seems like it would be a lateral move.

This is a huge problem - we need better organizational structures. Non-profits are less likely to end up owned by oligarchs, but look at OpenAI. I'd love to know if there's some kind of scalable cooperative? Searching for models for https://joinable.us (healthy social media!)

The problem is twofold. The gouvernance one is "easy" and the solution is as old as democracy : divide the power and create counter-powers (ethics/scientific committee,…) with actual power

Then the second and biggest problem is funding. We can’t rely on volunteers for alternatives

does there need to be a server at all? couldn't there be something like a P2P cell structure, like a more complex version of bittorrent. every user within a cell of, say, 1000 users stores the data of every other user in their cell, and a chunk of the data of the wider network.

To use the torrent comparison, you become a seeder for your cell, storing 100% of the data of your cell locally on your device. Then you and everyone in your cell stores, say, the same 0.1% chunk of data from the wider network.

The thing you are talking about is secure scuttlebutt, a P2P protocol but it’s hard to use. A less intensive alternative is the Nostr protocol which has multiple relays to store your identity and data. It also has a multitude of apps.

Secure scuttlebutt is serverless, so yes. The posts are transmitted via device or over relays - which includes the cloud, but you don’t need to connect there if you don’t want to
