The use of the term "mastering" is disingenuous. I play guitar and have fir 40 odd years. I have yet to master the instrument. Why? Because mastering takes a lifetime. This is just another meaningless educational buzzword used to make it look like the author knows what they are talking about!

I didn't explain myself well. I think the term is deliberately misused to appeal to edugurus' sense of self importance. No high school will ever master a subject, because, as I say, IMO mastery takes a lifetime.

Does it take a lifetime to master times tables? Mastery is relative to the content. When I talk about mastery in the blog, I'm referring to automatising pre-requisite knowledge/skills in order to move on to more complex things that require those pre-requisites (like the long multiplication example)

Well, I suppose we have different understandings and interpretations. But I do wonder how teachers prior to 2010, certainly those in the 2nd half of the twentieth century managed without today's eduspeak.
