Feedback can be invaluable when you’re figuring out what people like about your content and message, but can be poisonous in taking the constructive feedback. Once a community has a sufficient size there will always be some part of the group unhappy, and you have to ignore them.

An incredible amount of gatekeeping goes on in some subreddits. It doesn't matter how qualified you are, how much direct industry experience you have, or even that you can share about repeated examples of a specific topic, some people will just not accept others have good perspective to add.

for sure, but there has been a pretty noticeable shift in how people communicate on there in the last few years imo. it was enough for me to finally drop the site completely. losing context and dramatizing irrelevant details shifted from the exception to the norm.

I graduated with a 4 year Computer Science degree having never used source control or unit testing. You don't know what was covered in a degree program, and a majority of the time the people who designed it had a different opinion of what it should look like from industry folks.

B Eng Comp Sys myself, through the early 2000s. We did cover Ethernet, plus a range of other mediums, networks and protocols. I have strong opinions about the suitability of current CS degrees. R&D for sure, but I think the course is not setting people up for wider applications of engineering.

To be fair, the differences between a hub and switch are easy to understand and is covered in any intro networking or troubleshooting course. It's not like they're expecting the intern to understand the difference between routers, layer 3 switches, vlans, and also architect a network deployment

OK but that's one small segment. You are asking an intern who is still new to the company who is still new to the team to have intro level courses completed across all if IT is my point. Every person is going to think their domain is the one that matters.

Interns are generally college students in the field and at least a year of courses. If they're a networking/IT student they should probably already know. Maybe not if they're in CS and want to be a dev but they should still learn basic networking. I knew before my first help desk job ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think that's great for you. I don't think it's as great to have expectations of others that aren't agreed upon first. It's not healthy for you or for them. And if they are a dev what are the chances they will ever need that knowledge, while useful sometimes it is rather esoteric these days.

Expecting someone wanting to work in IT/networking/development to learn is a basic requirement if you want to be successful. Again, I'm not expecting a dev intern to have a CCNA homelab. I'm saying it's not unrealistic to expect them to learn and understand basic concepts about network fundamentals

Depends imo. General tech support internship? I would expect you to know enough to help troubleshoot. Networking internship? Yeah, you should be trying to solidify your core routing and switching knowledge and help actually fix problems
