People say scientists are serious but marine biologists will spend hours quietly sitting around tables drawing on styrofoam cups and then tying said cups to deep sea submarines
Because ocean pressure will squeeze the air from the cups
And we are but human & we want tiny cup

Also fun: one of those styrofoam wig holders. Shrunken head!
(I ask in a thinly veiled attempt to hide my envy)
I can see how this would be an irresistible activity on a deep dive
I may have an expedition in June (2025) with some deep dives/ instrument deployments. If my slot on that expedition solidifies, I’ll put out a call for people to decorate their own cups and mail them to me! I’ll do the rest 🌊
Shall we conspire?!

I think my colleague may also be going out. We can make a Tiny Cup Mafia 😼
Want
Want to know very bad please
(genius idea!)
I like it.
No whales were harmed, etc...
"Oh cool earrings, where did you get them?"
"Only 2,700m below sea level"
(I'm a nerd too)
At sea level = 1 bar of atmospheric pressure or, 10 kg per sq cm
- 10 m = 20 kg/sq cm
- 30 m = 40...
- 40 = 50 etc, etc
😉
I find them rather pretty

It's also I *didn't* have much of a problem with the element in Avatar being called "Unobtanium"
(this is probably one of the reasons scientists are not allowed to name elements themselves anymore.)
And the drawing looks great. I always feel like my drawings are bad but then the shrink and shrinking makes everything better 😅
I feel silly now for not immediately checking the internet to see what the compressed cups looked like, because I couldn’t picture them either.
