Every year, my friend and fiercely dedicated First Amendment reporter @angelelatham.bsky.social files an enormous amount of public records requests to track banned books in Tennessee. She found a record number in 2024. Read her in-depth analysis here, complete with input from 1A experts.

All this got us thinking: What do the kids have to say about the decisions grown-ups like lawmakers and school board members are making? I spoke to more than a dozen Tennessee high schoolers to hear their thoughts. Spoiler alert: They agreed a lot more than they disagreed.

Along with unpacking the First Amendment concerns and tracking the 1,400 books pulled from Tennessee schools this year, @angelelatham.bsky.social also dug into the most-banned books in the last few years, and common themes some of them carry.

Finally, I organized a student discussion between members of the Young Republicans and Young Democrats clubs at Mt. Juliet High School. Their district recently banned 425 books.
