Dartford squares seem optimistic for the Peak District, Marmora's Warbler historically more reliable! Nightjars everywhere now though.....

1/2 Hi Alexander. Although the Dartford Warbler advance has crept back a bit in recent years, previously occupied sites are a good starting point when looking for (re)colonisation.

But why have Dartford Warblers been so comprehensively overtaken by Cetti's Warblers? Dartford were in UK earlier by centuries but are still stuck down south, whereas Cetti's have got all the way to Scotland in just 50 years.

Dartfords more cold sensitive seemingly. More food available in icey wetlands than on icey heaths perhaps, maybe local microclimate differences too.

That's the obvious conclusion, but it does beg the question: why were Cetti's not here all along, like Dartfords?

For that matter, were either present in Britain prior to the 17th-18th century "Little Ice Age"? Unknown, and probably unknowable, I guess?

2/2 In common with Nightjar, over recent decades both species have shown considerable gains on high altitude sites. More help with 2025 survey coverage is much needed!
