I was just chatting with some friends about this last night. The only drawback I can see is that logging companies and mills slow production in response to the tariffs. But as a society we can push hard for more builds keeping demand high.

There have always been tariffs on our softwood lumber. The US insists because of duties for subsidies and dumping. I have no freaking idea WTF that means but they just spiked the tariffs even higher in August. It's because most of their softwood lumber is harvested on private land whereas most of ours is harvested on Crown land and our provinces charge low stumpage fees. The Americans see it as a gvt subsidy. BC in particular undervalued stumpage.
