It's a bit more nuanced, I think ppl like to oversimplify this, but it's more about why the joke isn't funny, less about "owie, my fee-fees are hurt" comedy's appeal is about punching up, and when it's a "ha, teeth bIG!" It's...kind of dumb. 🤷🏼
Listen, it’s a mean spirited joke and her feelings are valid, but comedy is a full contact sport. Not for the feint of heard. I feel the same way about music and the lyrics used.
there's doing sports well & competitively, & then there's backyard sports w/ friends. Both r sports. One is better than the other. And within the context of professionals being paid on air to thousands of people...the standards are higher, hence the critique. Comedy is still alive & well.
They made fun of White Lotus characters and politicians. In her case, the joke was made about the actress herself. That’s why she rightly said they were “punching down.”
Would you change your mind if you were the focus of public ridicule? Would you find it upsetting that people were mocking you on National TV for the way you naturally look?
I’m not saying that I like it and I don’t have any desire to be a public figure. Just pointing out that we can’t pick and choose, this is still a nation (so far), where free speech is paramount. SNL has been around for 50 years and they don’t hold back.
I think you are confusing free speech (which the vast majority of the Worjd has, not just the US) with ridicule, and just because somethings have been around for a long time doesn't mean it's right.
I wonder what what side of freedom you actually sit on
You do realise that freedom of speech carries with it responsibility, right? Yes, you can be a shit. And then people can use their freedom of speech to point out that you're being a shit.
Not sure where you're going with the faint of heart comment. Care to elaborate?

I didn't think it was funny.
