On a flight from Medellín to Barranquilla I was the only gringo and the only person with a mask. Only a few coughs and sniffles here and there, but still glad I had it on walking through the airport when someone coughed in my face without turning or coughing into a sleeve.

That surgical mask is only a bit better than nothing, though - you're breathing through those gaps at the side. Should change to a well-fitted N95 with over the head loops (not ear loops).

It's literally sooo gross, everywhere you go, grocery store, outside: every 3rd person is coughing their lungs out, kids all sick - all of them walking around like that is normal. They don't even bother to cough in their elbow - just mouth open and go. 🤢 sooo nasty.

Sorry Claude but no. Masks have tiny tiny microscopic holes and several layers which block viruses. They also trap viruses with electrostatic charge. Beards have gaps that are much larger than a covid virus and they aren't going to block anything that small.
