I would be careful with quoting Thomas Mann, who was a fanatic German nationalist and had welcomed the first World War as a "cleansing" and liberating moment from a perceived liberal decadence. What he means by "evil" might be quite different from what we think today.
This is true, he never supported the Nazis and even migrated to the US in 1938. Nevertheless, one should not forget his early anti-liberal tendencies over which he even had a fallout with his younger brother Heinrich, who had been a harsh critic of German nationalism during WWI.
