Our great democratic impulse, created by WWII when Americans left home and fought side by side, regardless of history for history’s sake—that impulse crested in 1972 with congressional approval of the Equal Rights Amendment. It’s been in ebb since then.
Partially, the 2 main parties have a nominated entity clause-their ‘donations’ are exempt, & they are trying to stifle independent candidates who are increasingly popular with electors.
The problem is (as you already know) if our Congress were to somehow pass equivalent legislation, and the President were to somehow sign it, SCOTUS has decided that Money = Speech, and how dare we restrict the rights of Billionaires who already have more rights than the rest of us combined.
Our politics is messy, like everywhere I guess, but it's a fuck tonne better than the US. A few years a corrupt politician tried to bring NRA money into this country to help her win local elections and the whole country rose up against her. We will not stand for dirty money running our elections!
I'll also add that voting is mandatory here. When everyone votes, and every vote counts, you get a much better idea of what the country wants as a whole. I know not everyone agrees with this system, but trump never would've become potus at all if everyone was made to vote.
Senators Manchin and Sinema had the ability to pass a voting rights bill that would have kept dark money out of our elections, but they voted against it, killing the 1 chance we had to keep our elections fair.

Our 2019 election was bought by Billionaire Mining Slug, Clive Palmer. I wish that the legislation being brought in was to prevent such a thing happening in the future but it is aimed at preventing minor parties & independents threatening the rice bowls of the Labor, Liberal and National parties.
I'm somewhat surprised that Murdoch allowed this to happen.

This is a double-edged sword. In that, it promises to make elections fairer, but there are still loopholes. Also, small parties get less money to advertise their cause in the same bill.
We haven't stopped supreme court justices from taking bribes. No, we are not smart enough to overturn citizens united but corrupt enough to keep the law intact.
The people who can make the necessary changes know how to do it.
They just refuse to.
