Graton, CA. had such a doomsday horn, right across from the Post Office. I learned to not check my box at noon. But it's cool to listen to the sound die when shut off. The pitch gets lower than you think possible, and it slows down so gradually you shiver in anticipation

When we were kids the siren blew at noon and five. In the summer that's how all of us kids in the neighborhood knew when it was time to go home for lunch and supper. We also drank out of the hose :)

Ditto, Jess. We used to get a noon and 1pm whistle for lunch break. Then we lost the 1pm. Then we lost the noon whistle. We DO get the obligatory VFD fire whistle. But living in tornado alley, with NOAA, NWS, et al on the chopping block, maybe the tornado siren should be next...It'd serve us right.

First time I visited KC - I heard sirens at 1 pm Wed , I text my son to find out what I do . He said they test every week at that time . I asked him what happens if a real tornado came at 1 pm on a Wed - he said we all die . Cool

We used to live in a former asbestos “company town”. 5 am for the wives to make breakfast so men wouldn’t be late and 3 pm for lunch break. It still happened through the early 80’s. After a bit, you don’t hear them😀

In my small town: noon siren is one brief note that fades out, fire alternates between two notes, and actual tornado is sustained single note. There’s also one for nuclear attack but I forget what it is, never heard that one IRL. 😁

Same thing in the small town I grew up in in northeast Colorado in the 1950s-60s, except it was only once a day at noon, and was the fire dept siren that could be heard over the entire town (there were no tornado sirens in those days.)
