I think the Republican leadership thinks of Trump as their fall guy and Musk as his fall guy (or scapegoat).

If you are correct, Vance will keep Musk in position after Trump is gone. They'll settle into a more covert and less tumultuous slow burn toward fascism while claiming a return to normalcy.
