few things to be aware of:
- requires paying attention to heavy metal absorption, not for brownfields or old gas stations. as far as we know the nuts are not significant accumulators, since they are good at moving that into their wood, & so: continued research comparing metals in soil, wood, & nuts

- worse case with that, you've bound up those metals in the wood and nuts, coppice the trees, label them as bioremediation, coppice them for furnature. if the metals are bound in organic matter & rendered innert then you've solved a problem.
- best case- massive increase in local food production

- requires a culture of urban gleaning/community processing and million. but any city becomes devoted to a lot of trimming and processing and chipping equipment when they adopt a tree plan. It's just a matter of which type.

i'm putting this here to be realistic. people I know who have sent in urban nuts within the cadmium zone in portland (yes we have a cadmium zome in inner pdx) have had no problems with nuts they sent in for testing- we are pretty confident that at least for cadmium- the tree is protecting the nets

Additionally, a lot of urban trees are chosen because they are small, are expected to have short lives, and often need to be replaced. Too many old cities regret the beautiful old trees planted 100 years ago with their big roots and need for care around old branches. However:

another (& also approprite for chestnuts) approach would be to engage in urban coppice. pick trees that grow back quickly and cut them down on a rotation- keeps them young and within size standards but also allows for a fast accumulation of useful wood and carbon.

yeah the chestnut thing is such a practical example. They do well there. takes a little clean up but no worse than oaks really
