Haven't seen Shogun, but the 80s version of Dune is not that great (and less accurate to the books), and he was skeptical about Fury Road at first only to consider it the best film of 2015, so why is he not giving Villeneuve a chance?

Yeah, I mean there’s an 80s charm to it, but it’s not even an accurate recounting of the events from the novel. There were a lot of David Lynch additions made to the movie with no parallels in the source material, like the combat pug 💀

Stupid, but at we know he won't do any remakes. I love both Shogun but there is no comparison. Dune needed to be done right.
