Both kids where stated to be around the same age in the first movie, which was then changed with Lucius being four years older in the new movie. Its a retcon, since the filmmakers knew if they kept the old ages it would look bad since Maximus would have been a cheater in that situation.

??? What are you even talkin about. Lucius went from being around 8 years old to being 12 years old. Without the age retcon, both kids would have been born in the same year which would have made Maximus a cheater. So I don't get why you think this is a matter of a guy moving on from his dead wife.

I think this decision ultimately made the film worse. There was no indication this was the case in the original and it dishonours Maximus as it essentially implies he cheated on his wife 😫

Lucius was 12, and his deceased son was 8 I believe. So there's a gap there where it might make sense but yeah it I don't like the decision either.

There's a scene where they very specifically say both the kids are around 8, so unless Maximus was a gladiator for 4 years, they seem to have retconned that too

Stupid ass retcon shit - coz in the original it is implied that Maximus is a devoted husband and father and princess L has a long time crush on him.

I thought it was pretty clear that he and Lucilla had something going on in the movie in their pasts. Haven't seen the new one yet because the first is one of my favorites.
