They make up more than 7:10 SSA employees.

That's 42K+ people directly serving the public, out of 59K that were serving at the end of FY24, before the Trump purge began.

I foresaw this and applied for early SSA retirement on the night of the election. Anyone who has dealt with SSA knows how short-staffed they are. I got in under the wire. I’m aware that Trump’s supporters thought that he would not touch SSA.

It’s already a 3 to 4 hour wait on the phone and months for a phone appt. The office is always packed with quite a long wait there too. Soon talking to anyone will be nonexistent.

These are the most recent published numbers; they’re from 5 months ago (end of FY24).

Since then, SSA has lost a lot of staff: eliminated 2 whole offices, execs forced out, the “Fork,” early out, firing probationary staff, and people just leaving…down to 57K, according to today’s press release.

If you need to go to a SSA office for any reason, the wait is already hours-long. People sit there missing doses of medicine, meals. A longer wait would be intolerable.
