That might be one of the points you mentioned where you discovered something and ran with it (like secondary dominants, borrowed flat 6 and flat 7 chords) or when you ditched waltzes and decided to stick to a stable meter for the past 3 albums. It contributes to the distinct vibe of each album.
Jeff Rosenstock theory has been a special interest of mine and a topic of my spreadsheets for a while now and I’m very glad to see this response! (Unrelated but I’m also very hopeful that you continue that ambient phase that started after POST-. it was so cool and I love the Bandcamp singles!)
