Lukas is my 3rd advisor and we’re in friendly terms. I respect him—he truly is one of the brightest theorists out there. But I take issue with his rendition of military humanism (reduced to antiquarian fashion, Machiavelli’s take) and Enlightenment (rationalism, systems).

The said views reflect the stereotypes of early-modern mil lit that are prevailing in the AngloSaxon Strategic Studies community. The field does not engage with the lit in any serious way but takes for granted Clausewitz’s received ideas—strawman arguments and blanket statements.

In Book 2, Clausewitz trashed essentially ALL earlier authors, saying they only dealt with material dimensions of war, approaching war unilaterally; overlooked moral-psychological factors + genius. Then, when he blasts war by algebra and geometrism, he reinforces our received ideas about mil. lit.
