The other difference is that living people can change. If in 20 years Gaiman makes restitution and has demonstrably changed, and Dark Horse wants to publish with him again, I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to that.

This. Caravaggio can't hurt anyone anymore, but if we found out tomorrow that David Hockney had been a serial killer all this time, I wouldn't want a museum to suddenly announce a Hockney retrospective

Right. I know college professors who have taught books by Gaiman in their class. I don't think they have to stop -- the books aren't the problem. (Though right now there's definitely a good reason to talk about this story if you're going to do so). The problem isn't Stardust, it's Gaiman.

You can read the book and no harm will come to you. But if you put him on a book tour, that's a huge liability.
