Getting an email link to login is almost as bad as getting a fax with a temporary password. Zero excuse for that.

That bit about in-app browsers is a real source of pain (in general, not specifically for 404). I always disable the in-app browser in apps, but I’ve seen it cause a lot of frustration for my wife and in-laws.

Gmail also tends to “forget” your setting, which is doubly annoying.

Personally I prefer the username/password, don't like having to wait for the link to click being emailed. BUT, it's not that big of a deal and the magic link works so I'm happy. People choosing to die on this hill, I don't get it.

Is it not possible to do what services like Tailscale do and rely on a 3rd party identity provider for authentication? That seems like it would be the best of both worlds, but I'm not sure how involved it is to setup on the back end.

Does it cost money(other than initial setup)? As I said, I have no idea what's involved on the back end. Older approaches (e.g. OpenID) did not, IIRC.

this I can get behind, eliminating passwords is a must. protect your email account with MFA/Passkeys/etc and then magic links are just fine.

Anyone not wanting that is an idiot.

Today I signed up to read an article on my PC, but the link went to an email I only have access to on my phone. I tried pressing "sign in" on the desktop site after confirming my email address on mobile, but it just kept sending more emails.

How do I read 404 on PC if I don't have email access?

Forward the email to the email account on your desktop and then click it from your desktop
