I find it very messy, debugging is harder than it needs to be, and do not get me started on dataset versioning.
I have automated out a number of Excel workflows using better tools in all of my orgs so far, but it is only a drop in the ocean compared to how many of them are out there.
(I understand Excel a lot from the community of malleable software, where it is cited as a quite perfect hybrid of structured data, an infinite canvas, and computing functions the user can customize)

I do not like using Excel, but that is irrelevant when I am forced to work with it.
Looking at that, another advantage that comes to my mind is "scratchpad-i-ness" - itβs easy (often encouraged) to work bit by bit. You can see intermediate states and representations. Comfortable for explorative work.
