I thought it was (possible content warning) a metaphor for CSA. Especially the mom emphasizing they were lonely and no one willing to visit them... then what happens at the end (no spoilers!). Reminded me of Mulholland Drive in that way.

I'd had no interest in it at all until reading this, and now I know I'll not sleep until I see it.

Eh - while I love both of those things, I dunno if it fits here. Not to harp or anything, it just felt like there were two different movies.
