"Lynchian", to me, must always include Laura Palmer sobbing in gratitude and relief in the presence of an angel at the end of Fire Walk With Me. I don't think it gets any simpler or more earnest than that.

once I showed the scene where Albert tells Harry he loves him to my class. I got comments about how corny it was, and they perplexed me so much. David Lynch was always, always incredibly earnest and authentic about love.

FWWM is my fav movie ever and it's because it so accurately captures the experience of being in the belly of catastrophic abuse-- there's a montage sequence in FWWM a little before the climax of the movie of Laura dissociating through her day and god, that's what it's like

it's as you said-- david lynch's empathetic filmmaking was sublime. film has great capacity for empathy and even if his work was impenetrable a lot of the time the empathy was always there

Couldn't be said any better, thank you. Even his darkest and most perverse works lament the absence of love and empathy - the strangeness is part of the feeling we have that the world isn't meant to be this way. His heart is most on its sleeve in THE ELEPHANT MAN and THE STRAIGHT STORY.

YES. Just thinking this again last night, the arguments I've had about the violence towards women in his work.
It's visceral and real and horrifying because he believes in the truth of that. It's never glib or Hollywood or just a plot device, it's a manifestation of the darkest evil.
