I guess like right now, should I stick with defender or should I be devoting resources into crafting these weapons and learning them and upgrading them? I think it’s my Souls brain going like oh okay you can fuck up a build if you spend too much time and resources on Drake sword early on - ThreadSky

The Defender weapons are colloquially known as a “newb trap”. They were meant to help returning vets climb up to the DLC content quickly, however they were turned into a crutch by new players who were able to breeze through content because of them and suddenly found themselves hit by a skill (1/2)

wall that they struggled to surpass. Taking the time to grind out the normal weapons and armor means you’re spending more time gaining experience (getting gud) so that where the Defender armor would stop being viable it won’t be as hard for you to adjust. (2/2)

I would always try to build all weapons available, that's kinda the core gameplay loop! If you don't do it now, you'll kinda have to go back and do it later when they're not really a challenge anymore. Their different elemental effects can make a real difference too against monster weaknesses.

All you're losing there is money, which you'll make just by doing quests and selling some of the more expensive monster parts. It's never a waste to start a weapon tree early!
