Placing my hands firmly on your shoulder to let you know how serious I am when I say that Gundam 0079 holds up and is still more than worth watching now, 45 years later
I'm up to Unicorn in my watchthrough of the UC but truly nothing after 79 quite hits like it did. The most excited I've been post 79 is when 79 characters show up in the other shows lol.
I have not, I just finished G Gundam and I liked that a LOT but I'm missing some of the real robot vibes of 79. I plan to check out most if not all series eventually though!
Huh. I’m watching 0079 right now as well, and one thing that immediately stands out is how baller the action is in this show. Like there are moments that have me going "OH DAMN"
The Black Tristars battle where it goes to slow-mo while maintaining the feeling that the RX-78 is a MASSIVE piece of equipment they SHOULD NOT be able to move like this is so fucking peak.
I'm not sure I've ever been in a situation where the Act 3 of a series made me go from "I'm not sure about all this new stuff" to "I would die for this series" so masterfully.
The best part is that it didn’t. If White Base was destroyed before leaving Earth again almost nothing would have changed. Hell, other pilots on the Feddie side had more mobile suit kills than Amuro.
For once the final battle isn’t the hero defeating the villain. It’s escape and survival.
I mean, the Zeong was just one powerful machine and not inherently more powerful than a Musai cruiser. Amuro couldn’t stop the colony laser that wiped out 1/3 of the entire massed Feddie fleet. The Federation still won with such casualties happening at moment 1 of the battle.
I started with wing back in the day and every time I'm like "oh that's new/ unique for gundam" i find out they stole the idea from either 0079 or zeta. its crazy how much newer gundams only focus on a fraction of what 0079 did.
That’s the shot that made me a Gundam fan. I found an article once about the original RX-78 statue that stood where the Unicorn stands now, and as they were taking it down, they took the head and left arm off first as a tribute to the Final Shooting. The rest, they say, is history.
