The Guardian today reports that "Labour MPs have been piling pressure on the government to change its mind over the winter fuel payment, as well as its plans for £5bn benefit cuts, before a vote on “stage one” of its welfare plans in early June.":

I'm a pensioner - I do not need the help. Nor do many other pensioners

Labour fucked up on WFP (first Brown should never have made it universal, 2nd Reeves should have managed a transition over maybe 2 winters)

But just bringing it back is a terrible waste of money better spent on poor kids.

It is still provision of money at the grassroots level, which is less of a waste than most other spending that gets redirected off into corporate profits.

Wealthy old pensioners are not "grass roots" - most do not even vote Labour - the Tory attack ad on the subject had a man wearing a Rolex complaining about losing his allowance

The issue is the bureaucracy waste involved in exclusion policies, and it is far better to share with more people than to risk someone in need being missed out.

Apparently there is talk of raising the threshold to something over the benefits level, or making it only for older pensioners

The latter seems unjust to me, given that one consequence of poverty tends to be a shorter life
