I honestly don’t remember him as a kid, as he passed when I was 7. I do still have his baseball card from that year, where I thought it appropriate to write “dead” across the back.
Since then I’ve seen tons of highlights, and I’ve come to appreciate how amazing he was.
A truly great player and human being who had to deal with bigotry. A prominent sportscaster insisted on calling him 'Bobby' whenever he referred to him.
The day I lost my childhood hero....loved Roberto Clemente. A very sad day as I recall. He was really loved by many Pittsburgh Pirate fans. An unbelievable baseball talent. Oh and what an arm. When runners challenged him they generally lost. Amazing batter who could hit the ball wherever he wanted.
Technically true, but still not recognized as a state and doesn’t have a vote in congress. So American to claim his greatness but not respect his people/culture
As a high school kid, I was a regular in the 99 cent left field bleacher seats at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Looking across to right field, you could tell Clemente was special just by the way he stood.
I saw him pick up a ball at the base of the right field wall in Wrigley. Half spin one hop strike to get the batter at third. What an arm!
RIP Roberto.
Saw one of the last games he played at Shea in mid/late September of 72 around my 15th birthday. Got his autograph on the scorebook (gave it to one of my employees who was from PR and loved him) 🤦🏻♂️

One of the greatest on the field
One of the giants off the field
RIP Roberto.
