Poor guy travels 3,000 km to get to a new land where the land surface doesn’t keep collapsing into the ocean, gets ratted out by locals for not looking like anyone else, arrested, and deported back to his starting point.
Released and (hopefully) leaving our shores! Reckon they would have taken a good few miles out but thats all. If he/she makes it back he/she will have a tale to tell...if they'll believe it. "Sand? Warm?" Maybe become a holiday spot for them...or retirement location.
Latest I heard from niece was they released "Gus" 10 miles out from coast of southern West Australia (Albany), and it was going in the right direction. Wouldnt it be good to have it tagged and you could get update on it's progress?
My niece was one of the people who found "Gus" whilst walking her dogs on that Denmark, West Aust beach. If I knew how, I'd post her short video of "Gus" on that day.
The dog walk took hours longer than usual! As she had to try to find someone to contact, someone to take care of it. Sat with it on the beach for an experience she won't forget. It may well be the only Emp Penguin to have such a bad sense of direction and end up in Aust ;-)
Some might say he had an excellent sense of direction! Imagine his disappointment being removed from that sandy beach to an icy wilderness. 😁
Good work by your niece, must have been interesting phone calls. 'I've found this Emperor Penguin on the beach...'
