With the Assisted Dying Bill the critical issue of coercion is also contentious as is the potential desire of older or disabled patients to not want to be a burden, physically or socially or financially, on their families or on the NHS.
It disgusts me how long it has taken to get here. I watched my Mum and Dad suffer in their dying moments which to this day breaks my heart and never leaves me. I know they would have been given a choice
Didn’t get to read the amazing Frances Ryan till after the vote It brought back memories of losing my beloved wife after an 11 year battle with cancer She was desperate to see our sons become fathers & us grandparents but nevertheless I believe she would have supported the Bill It’s complicated
The inadequacies of palliative care should surely should not have been used as a reason to vote against this Bill. Saying that people have to suffer because of this is just wrong!
Its very difficult because neither argument exists in a vacuum.
People should not be forced to choose to die because of inadeqcies in pallative care, but likewise people should not be forced to suffer because the pallative care system is broken.
Living in Scotland this Bill does not affect me directly however there is an attempt for similar legislation to be passed here. Personally I do not have a terminal diagnosis and don’t know if I would choose to end my life if this changed however I would like to know that I have that choice.
