First, Greece has like, 5 cars. Secondly, American culture is more addicted to driving to their mailbox in their 24-cylinder monster truck, they could give 2 shits about tik tok. Thirdly, this study smells of the oligarchy.
It’s high time that the UK’s carbon footprint included all the goods that are manufactured in places like China *FOR* the UK and then transported to the UK for consumption / use in the UK.
Carbon emissions that would not have been made at all were it not for the demands of UK.
Idiotic article. Doesn't say where emissions come from because there are no emissions from a fucking app. This is like cow farts ate causing global warming. Just a distraction article not based on science.
"The study examined the carbon footprint associated with each user per minute by incorporating the emissions associated with data centers, which made up about 99% of the footprint, and the emissions associated with charging devices after using the platforms."
I'd put money on it not being. Transport will be an order of magnitude greater.
If Tik Tok is equivalent to 123 miles of driving for an average user, they'd need to use 81 equivalent platforms to equal a fairly typical 10000 mile a year if driving.
For most countries you'd be right.
From the article:
"The average TikTok user will burn 48.49kg of CO2e on the app in one year, according to Greenly’s analysis. In second place comes YouTube, with an average user burning 40.17kg of CO2e. Instagram users will burn just 32.52kg of CO2e."
India for example has 210kg CO2 per capita transport emissions. And based on those numbers it wouldn't be difficult to exceed that via social media and other internet use.
Greece is the 95th largest country in the world by population, and there are 140+ countries smaller than it. So TikTok, like the US military, pollutes more than 140 countries.

That's crazy.

Quite amazing isn't it?
