£300k by March and then what...? If the running costs are £2M a year and only £300k comes from central funds, that means another £1.7M in the next 12 months much be found. Will there be another similar dramatic appeal in April?
There needs to be a short, medium, and long term plan set out.
The cathedral runs a major attraction every summer, and then there's regular giving from tourists and worshippers, and a fundraising programme. They don't just sit there the rest of the year.
Financial Ruin is the landscape where spiritual foundations habitually inhabitband breed. The core building looks in great shape yet the message has lost compassion and rhetoric to capture docks and build on it's mission. We need more then mental health will improve.
Can't run two systems on.
It's interesting seeing the majority responses to this post. The loss of sympathy due to the public failure to address safeguarding (and the identification of the central wealth of the institution) being prominent. Reputation- like virginity- once lost cannot be regained.
I’m sorry but isn’t the CofE immensely rich? Pretty sure they are. Just another grift to try and con poor people out of their money while the church hordes its wealth.
The Homeless centre in the grounds is in a house where a friend of mine grew up. As an adult, she often not only gave homeless people in Peterborough a sandwich when she saw them - she also used to chat to them. She was a saint.
I'm local to this cathedral, and not at all religious, but it is a stunning building, and amazing to go on a tour of (right up into the top). It's also very good with events, including some fascinating science exhibitions. I don't know the finances of the CofE, but I'd hope it will support.
I see this as a place of historic significance. The fact that it's a place of religion is secondary to a huge proportion of locals to whom it's a central focus point of the city .
Well then maybe the church can sell off a Rembrandt or two. Alternatively, they could try not protecting Pedophile priests, and people might start going again. Just a thought.

St Paul’s cathedral was rebuilt using money from an additional tax on coal.
Do not pay for the Church’s vanity projects.

Gosh, I wonder why.
You lose trust lose money.
Vice versa.
