But dementia by definition means they can’t consent. It would be their families or an outside body deciding for them. That’s unethical. Besides, many get incorrectly diagnosed with dementia when there’s nothing wrong with them. This would be horribly abused
My mom has stated she would want this but under the current guidelines for California that isn't possible if you were to get dementia. If it is clearly expressed in a legal document, they should let you do it.
Sounds sensible. We need to end our obsession with keeping people alive at all costs regardless of their quality of life. It's uncomfortable to acknowledge, but we basically warehouse these people in nursing homes at vast expense and zero point.
All the more reason for others not to choose for them. We all make valued judgements, so we can not assume anything about another's QoL, wishes, beliefs etc etc.
Thanks for spelling out so clearly why this legislation should not be passed. Today, this group of people’s tomorrow disabled children and adults with a learning disability. And then?
I'm confused. When people like me said Assisted Dying would be a slippery slope we were told the conditions were very strict and would never change. And yet...
Everyone should be able to legally choose their own end time without permission, without health issues, and without repercussions. If we can provide medical assistance for a peaceful end for someone because they are ill, we should be able to get the same if we just don’t want to be here anymore!
..... idk, i dont agree.
its not my life, its not my choice to make for these people.
and i see nothing wrong with granting the suffering peace if they ask for it.
especially since it will be less painful.

The reasons people live in NHs are complex & variable. Categorising any group of people as less worthy of life is horrendous & ableist.
Bye now
If it happens, it will be a separate, thoroughly discussed choice taken by majority vote in parliament.
