Alas, you would get a lot of Ash and Sycamore trees growing there. They both poison the ground (as a defence mechanism against fungi). Beech, oak, Scots pine. That's what you want to boost a mycelium network.
This needs to be scaled up. Most efficient way by abandoning as much adjacent land as possible so that these 'islands' in hostile landscape benefit from a degree of connectivity, to increase the rate of natural regeneration merely at the cost of abandoning (investing) land. We need a bigger vision.
