Deaths from alcohol keep rising . I believe there 88,000 a year about ten years back . Just looked it up and 178,000 people died in the US last year from alcohol.
There is constant talk about illegal drugs. But alcohol is killing more people than all illicit drugs combined.
My comment was not about promoting alcohol, it was about all the industries without any warnings, i.e. artificial sweeteners, UPF and additives which deserve the same caution.
Yes, the profits of corporation and their shareholder 'value' are far more important than anything. They'll wilfully pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and even the brains and other organs of our unborn developing in the womb. They're evil bastards. Fact.
I think having sobering up 'drunk tanks' outside A&E depts and *charging* people for their use would greatly help in discouraging excessive drinking. Drunks do not belong in A&E and are both a danger and a nuisance to staff and to patients.
I drink, and I'm happy for this to happen, but WHY are we not doing a similar thing to gambling, and also loot boxes in gaming. I have almost never gambled, but we are heading straight towards a cliff when it comes to both adults and kids going broke on this extremely predatory addiction.
Back in 1981 I worked in a bookies in Bristol and I watched the bloke lose £10,000 one afternoon
Was hilarious at the time.
Now when I think back about it, what kind of society allows that to happen?
Precisely. My dad was a gambler and it always put me off. There seemed to be a stigma around it. Now I see teenagers spending thousands on sports betting and crypto BS
