As an American stuck in a never-ending rinse cycle of our forever leaders simply kowtowing to the stupidest and most lying McLiarsons, I wholeheartedly approve of this plan.
Being forced from office is the most lenient of sentences for the result of what their lies can cause e.g a lie that takes a country to war or causes deaths in the public health system.
Good idea but proving intent is hard. Should also punish carelessness, i.e. not taking reasonable care to tell the truth. What would be reasonable? What an honest, diligent and responsible person would do to ensure a truthful answer.
The consequences should be going out after new elections. This is the kind of vague ideas that are impossible to regulate
What we need is a new media strategy that doesn't rely on selling journals everyday. One suggestion could be tax-funded coupons so each individual person buys a subscription
This could never work in the US because people are convinced that their delusions are fact - they’d sue for first amendment violations every. single. time.
Love the idea. Although that may be too drastic to start with, we wont have any leaders left.
Maybe dock them a weeks pay every time they lie, and after the 5th time, then fire them. Just a thought.
Unless they're conservative with the criteria (black and white statements), this is a lot of power given to an institution (the thing we want to regain trust in) and politicians talk a lot
I don't like it, non-gouvernemental conservative fact checkers are the way, what media is supposed to do
I'm betting it doesn't pass but if it did it would certainly be a VERY interesting political experiment. I would envisage said politicians would be spending all their waking hours suing or prosecuting one another. However, bring it on. We might even get a legal definition of what a lie is.
A proposition to the proposition: as politicians lies are undermining people's trust on democracy, liers should be tried for treason. And face the firing squad.

I want some of that Wales stuff!
Never understood how this was not the case anyway…
I hesitate, as I don't like the prospect of an arbiter of truth, but there needs to be some consequences for lying.

Politicians need consequences to their lying mouths.
