Brexit was a country shooting itself in the foot, this idea is exactly the same. The only ones to gain are AI software companies via theft on a grand scale.
You think? About time they woke up! From the government that invented the "copyright law," and now they are thinking of ruining the livelihood of artists across the country. Wake up!
At some point in the 1970's members of Marillion went to a Genesis concert, and the rest is history. A.I is merely a variation on the theme of being inspired by something and creating something not too dissimilar. It runs throughout music, arts and literature... all of it derivative in some sense.
Plenty of great music and art is made by machines. Or more accurately, humans and machines in creative union. Using A.I to generate art is just a variation of flicking paint at a spinning canvas and hoping for the best. Art, once seen by the naked eye, belongs to the beholder as much as the creater.
Marillion were terrible … saw them several times … I was young … then the penny dropped. Never knew Genesis before nor ever interested after either. The lamb with 6 toes lies…
It's not the same. AI can only generate from what it's trained upon, and the myth of the infinite latent space is laid bare by the similar slop that it can produce. It can also be amazing, but that takes time & skill. Humans can be inspired by art, music etc without the limitation of data training.
If you've spent much time listening to film scores lately, you may noticed the indifferent musical slop is often not produced by say Mr Zimmer himself, but a bunch of lackeys working from his musical stable. Same with say Damien Hirst and his pickled pets. Humans, machines... beauty and crap.
You're mixing genre output with creativity. Andrew Lloyd Webber is anti-AI copyright theft, but stole Echoes by Pink Floyd note for note. Berlioz too. But he did some original stuff early on. Same with Hearst. AI can only mash up genres from the past because that's where the data training comes from
Ah, but wait until A.I starts mashing stuff up from the future and parallel dimensions, with the advent of 'quantum' computing 🤪 But then again, as John Lennon once said 'the music of the spheres' came to him and he was simply the channel. Raising the question: do they create the art at all?
That idea goes back to Icon painting, with the painter being the conduit for the original impression from the Veil of Veronica. Plato thought painting was stupid because artists just pushed paint around and the image just appeared without any skill. AI doesn't know what's good and what isn't.

It’s bad for the artists, it’s bad for the UK and it’s bad business.
