Gen. Dannatt makes a great point and strong argument.
The complexity is with the funding. He states that either taxes need to rise or borrowing increased both of which would have a detrimental impact on the lives of the electorate given the cost of living crises and thus would be very unpopular.
Well, here’s an idea, let’s make the cuts in health or education or any other department you think has too much money; come on Sherlock, which alternative budgets would you cut.
They’ve tried that, the rich are leaving the UK/sheltering money abroad etc. if the government is going to increase taxes it’s going to have to increase the basic rate of income tax as nothing else will generate enough revenue for government - only problem being increasing taxes shrinks the economy!
If they made council tax proportionate to property values, we could increase taxes on the rich massively.
People want to own property here and live here. The right, talk our country down when they state that rich people will only live here if the taxes are low. Some will leave, but most will stay.
If we keep all spending as it is then the country cannot afford to increase defence spending without either borrowing more or increasing the tax burden. Borrowing more is foolish at this point but I would be willing to pay 5p more in tax *if* it was guaranteed to go into defence/ health.
