Does the writer of this article realize that this happens to around 114,000 people every year? Why is this white privileged woman’s story everywhere and where are the stories about poor brown skinned women?
Did you actually read the article ? That is precisely why she is getting the story out there, to help the people she met and others like them who don't have the contacts and media clout to do so.
Well its also because shes Canadian. 🇨🇦 dont have freedom of movement but 🇨🇦 dont need visas etc and you used to be able to go to and fro with just a drivers licence or state/provincial ID.
My point is that this is nothing new. We are playing into Trump‘s fear and this is having a chilling effect on immigrants who are not showing up for school and medical appointments because they are scared.
Back in 1979 I overstayed my visa in England by several days. I had applied for an extension, thinking it would surely be granted because I was with my bio dad, but no. Our relationship had no legal standing because I was adopted. I got the notice to leave by mail, AFTER the date on the notice.
I promptly got married, one of several guys who worked with me that offered. They were suspicious to no avail! We were actually dating and stayed married for 18 years, brought him to America and had a son.
This is horrifying. Every American needs to read this to understand what is being done in our names. People who have done nothing wrong are being abducted and treated like criminals without a hearing or a lawyer. If we do not speak out against it, we are complicit.
For profit prisons for ICE detentions!
Lawless sadists who use tactics & conditions on people they detain as if they were torturing enemy combatants. Cold freezing cells, lights on 24/7, dehumanizing them by refusing to speak to them & and of course, the biggie denying due process. Abolish ICE.
OMG, nightmare! Politicians call it “our broken immigration system”, as if it’s just paperwork problems. This heartbreaking description shows that it’s really a cruel, inhumane, and insane system of psychological torture run by depraved profiteering corporations.
This is what #EbenezerMusk and Trump want to do to our entire government, our whole country. Destroy and replace with inferior profiteering so called “services”.
This is why California terminated all state contracts with private prisons, thank God! We should demand the same ban for ICE prisons.
Very chilling account of what really happens when someone is detained by ICE. Extremely inhumane conditions & no one given any explanation of what’s happening to them. Really thought this happened only in Russia. But it happens in America EVERYDAY. These are human rights violations!
My students in the UK ask me often, "how is the US? Is it a nice country to live in?" I always answer, "Not if you're black, brown, woman, gay, poor, etc.."
I do. I lived long enough in the US to experience the brunt of your healthcare system. I shattered my tibia+fibula in a car accident. The bill was £176k. My car insurance paid $50k. My health insurance $20k. Neocapitalism is a hell of a thing.
in addition, your insurance company *and* employer can dictate what treatments they will cover. some employers will not cover emergency abortions, even on pain of death. it used to be that insurance wouldnt cover pregnancy, allergies and cancer bc they're "pre-existing conditions".
medical bankruptcy is a big thing here. people lose their homes, family savings, cars, everything. more and more landlords reject applicants if they have a bankruptcy on their credit report. unless you're rich, do not come here. i hate to say this, bc this is a beautiful place... except for greed.
I take it that permission has been given to treat citizens of former allies like this and that some normal everyday U.S. folks are needing to/wanting to work in unthinkable places. All of us should really question a U.S. vacation.
I had a tiny bad experience once with a CBP officer in Vermont when I entered from Canada to get some gas.
He made me stand under the rain with a map (long time ago, road maps were still a thing), drawing my planned route into the US on the mp. He was watching me from the window all the time.
This kind of cruelty happens when sadists control a country’s government and weaklings control the rest.

Here’s the important bit: “Ice detention isn’t just a bureaucratic nightmare. It’s a business. These facilities are privately owned and run for profit.”
This incentivises maximising the number of people rounded up, the time they are detained and doing the least possible to look after them.
I have friends in Canada and Europe that usually come here for the Van Nationals in July. I have a feeling many of them won’t risk it and I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t either.

Trump’s only tool is fear. People need to stop giving him that power.
Every year Canadians get detained. That rather not the point in this case.
The cruelty and fearmongering keeps their base engaged and pliable.
But their motivation is always greed.

The US needs to be put on all the lists of abusers.

History will not be kind to us more than likely.
Even though we are resisting.
We are now the Third World.
